Deciding to become a United States citizen may be one of the most important decisions in your life. There are many benefits to becoming a United States citizen such as voting, petitioning family members to come the United States or enhancing your petition, obtaining citizenship for your children who are born abroad, travelling with a US passport, becoming eligible for federal jobs, and being able to remain outside the United States for as long as you want without fear that your status may be taken away. You may qualify for naturalization if you have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if you are filing as a spouse of a U.S. citizen) and all other eligibility requirements are met such as good moral character and physical presence.
